EastEnders spin-off could help put Ireland on soap fans’ ‘holiday wish list’
Fans of the British soap opera EastEnders may be persuaded to add Ireland to their list of must-visit destinations after watching a TV spin-off that was filmed on the neighbouring isle.
Tourism Ireland is investing in a marketing campaign to complement the six-part series, Redwater, which airs in spring. It was filmed in Dublin and in Dunmore East, a fishing village in County Waterford.
“It’s another great way to highlight the beautiful scenery of Ireland to millions of people across Britain, inspiring them to put Ireland on their holiday wish list for 2017,” a spokeswoman for Tourism Ireland said.
Redwater stars actors Shane Richie and Jessie Wallace who play their EastEnders’ characters, Alfie and Kat Moon. The rest of the cast are not from the long-running soap, and the new mini-series is touted as a standalone drama. It was written by former EastEnders chief Dominic Treadwell-Collins and Danish director Jesper Nielsen.
Meanwhile, on the west coast of Ireland, the Wild Atlantic Way coastal route has also been helping increase visitors to the less travelled parts of the country, an initiative supported by Failte Ireland and Tourism Ireland.
