After SeaWorld announced its global partnership with the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) earlier this month, the operator is hosting the body’s members this week with a behind-the-scenes tour of Mako – Orlando’s tallest, fastest and longest rollercoaster.
Taking place on 25 August, the event offers a private tour of the 87,000sq ft (8,000sq m) Shark Wreck Reef, with a panel of creators and builders of the ride scheduled to speak during a Q&A session about the attraction.
The 4,760-ft-long (1,450m) Mako hypercoaster is a prime example of SeaWorld’s conservation-based approach to its parks as it strives to change the brand’s public perception, with the coaster designed to create a fun and meaningful experience.
Reaching speeds of up to 73mph (118kmph), the Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M) -designed ride is modelled after its namesake – the mako shark – which it emulates in feel, speed and agility.
The educational aspect of the ride is introduced at it’s entrance in the queue station. AV elements tell the story of the Mako and the plight of sharks. Much like SeaWorld’s Sea Rescue: The Ride, the experience is designed with the intention of educating the visitor as much as it entertains them.
SeaWorld was named a Global Partner to the TEA on 12 August, meaning the operator will strengthen ties with the organisation, working closely on a number of projects and initiatives.
“SeaWorld is not just an entertainment company; it’s a company with a purpose: conservation, wildlife rescue and education,” said Anthony Esparza, SeaWorld CCO.
“We want to share that purpose with our creative industry community, as well as with our guests. We value knowing what’s going on with our fellow creators in themed entertainment. Any successful organisation needs advisers, partners and resources outside the company as well as within, and for us the relationship with TEA is an important facet of partnering with this important industry.”
