Bjarke Ingels Group design bouncy castle beer pavilion for Roskilde Music Festival

Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) have created an inflatable beer pavilion for the Roskilde Music Festival which is part sculpture, part bouncy castle.

The structure – called FOAM and is sponsored by beer brand Tuborg – is a giant “bubble-like cloud” which is illuminated by purple LED lights at night and can be inflated in seven minutes.

BIG was tasked to create a 120sq m (1,300sq ft) mobile pavilion which could function as a social space for festival-goers to relax inside between performances.

"The idea of using a bouncy castle came about because one can create any kind of structure with this type of material,” said BIG partner Jakob Lange. “The process of inflating and deflating the castle is easy. Producing it turned out to be much more difficult though than we had initially expected. The first manufacturer completely gave up and we were under enormous time pressure. But the end-result is the most beautiful thing you could imagine.”

FOAM will be made available to the general public this year at a series of festivals and arts events around Denmark, including the CHART contemporary art fair in Copenhagen. Next year it will go on display in a 4km art zone in Aarhus to celebrate the city’s status as European Capital of Culture.

The pavilion is the second to be designed by BIG in recent times, following on from their hugely successful Serpentine Pavilion in London.

The Roskilde Festival is a popular annual event. It is held on a site next to MVRDV's recently-opened Museum of Rock Music, which channels Mick Jagger, David Bowie and other flamboyant figures from the history of rock music with a textured, spiky golden facade.
