Leisurely stroll best for reducing blood pressure

By Andrea Jezovit    03 Jun 2008

Walking at a steady pace is more effective in reducing blood pressure than walking at maximum intensity, according to researchers from the Department of Sport Science Tourism and Leisure at Canterbury Christ Church University, UK.

The exercise science researchers studied middle-aged men with borderline higher blood pressure, and found that walking at 50 percent effort for 30 minutes was the most effective way to reduce participants’ blood pressure.

Lead researcher Andrew Scott presented his findings at the annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine on 31 May.
