Bristol Rovers in "final talks" over stadium plans
Nick Higgs, chair of Bristol Rovers Football Club (BRFC), has said the club is in “final talks” with legal representatives for supermarket chain Sainsbury’s over an agreement to sell its Memorial Stadium.
The Memorial Stadium site will redeveloped into a mixed-use site to include a Sainsbury's supermarket, 65 housing units, 23 affordable units, community space, 572 parking spaces and a public square.
BRFC will use the income from the sale to fund the building of a new 21,700-capacity stadium at the Stoke Gifford area of the city.
The club has already secured planning permission for its new home.
In a statement, Higgs said: “We have a contract in place with Sainsbury’s for the purchase of the Memorial Stadium site and there is daily dialogue between both sets of lawyers, and they are working to conclude the final contract conditions.
"Once these have been completed we will be able to move forward with our plans, and we hope to be able to make an announcement in the near future.”
