American culinary arts non-profit The James Beard Foundation (JBF) has announced the winners of its 2019 Restaurant Design Awards.

Atomix, a Korean eatery designed by New-York based firm Studio Writers, won the category for "75 Seats and Under", while the "75 Seats and Over" award went to Pacific Standard Time – a Chicago restaurant conceived by Parts and Labor Design.

Completed in 2018, Atomix features neutral-toned interiors and an intimate but "theatrical" aesthetic.

Pacific Standard Time, meanwhile, has earned praise for its open, West Coast-style atmosphere, an ambience facilitated by the space's large windows and palette of materials inspired by rustic settings.

The other JBF honourees include the Schwartz and Architecture-designed Mexican restaurant El Pípila, which won in the "Other Eating and Drinking Places" category; and Canlis, the winner of the "Design Icon" accolade.

Described by the JBF jury committee as "the very icon of Northwest design", Canlis is located in Seattle, Washington, and was planned in 1950 by architect Roland Terry.

"Terry's style at Canlis," explained the committee, "can be seen as a kind of 'fusion cuisine', merging Frank Lloyd Wright and the nascent California Modern movement evolving just down the coast."

All the winners were revealed yesterday evening (6 May) at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.

Established in 1990 to honour the memory of the American celebrity chef James Beard, the JBF Awards both celebrate and promote the artistry of culinary professionals and designers.
